Septic Plumbing and the Compliance Certificate in Busselton

The pipes to a septic system are drainage plumbing, and Building and Energy says all water supply, sanitary and drainage plumbing work, other than a short list of tasks it names, must be carried out by a plumber or permit-holder. For major work at your home, including new drainage installations, the plumbing contractor must give you a certificate of compliance, which Building and Energy calls your six-year guarantee that the work meets the plumbing standards.

What septic plumbing and the compliance certificate in Busselton actually involves

Building and Energy's scope-of-work page for plumbers lists the installation, alteration, extension, disconnection, repair or maintenance of underground pipes used for carrying wastewater or other waste to an apparatus for the treatment of sewage. That is the wording the pipes to a septic tank fall within. This page says no more than the two Building and Energy pages say about who may do it.

The certificate

Building and Energy says the certificate of compliance is your six-year guarantee that the plumbing work has been completed in accordance with the plumbing standards, and that it applies to major plumbing work at your home, which it says includes new drainage installations. Ask for the certificate when the work is done, and keep it with the council's permit to use.

A separate step: the council's permit

The certificate is not the council's permit to use. The council arranges its own inspection and grants the permit after the work is complete, and the Department of Health says it is an offence to start construction or installation of any wastewater system without an approval from the local government or the Department. The approval page sets out the order.

Ask the provider who will do the pipework, and whether the certificate of compliance is part of the quote.
