Cost

How much does septic tank installation cost in Busselton?

We do not answer that with a price, because no government source sets one for the job. The State sets two fees of A$118.00, one for the application and one for the permit to use, and the City's own schedule of fees was not read. What changes a quote is whether sewer reaches the lot, the system the site calls for, the access and where the tank can sit. Ask more than one provider what its quote covers. The costs page lists each rule with its source. The costs page's Septic tank costs and rules check lists the State and City of Busselton rules and fees for a septic system, each with its source.

Do I need council approval for a septic tank?

Yes. The regulations say a local government approves an apparatus intended to serve a single dwelling or any other building that produces not more than 540 litres of sewage per day, and the Department of Health says it is an offence to start construction or installation of a wastewater system without an approval from the local government or the Department. A larger residence or commercial premises needs the Department of Health's approval, as the City of Busselton's page says.

The ground in Busselton

When to judge the groundwater under a block

The State's Planning for Water Guidelines say that where groundwater separation is not evident, an assessment under the wettest time of the year conditions may be required. This shows which months the Bureau of Meteorology's record puts at the wet end and at the dry end.

  • The wettest months

    Best months: Jun, Jul

June and July have the highest mean rainfall in the Bureau's long record for Busselton Shire, which makes them the months the Guidelines' wettest time of the year points to.

  • The driest months

    Avoid: Jan, Feb, Dec

December, January and February have the lowest mean rainfall in the same record. A look at a block then shows the ground at its driest, not the wettest-time conditions the Guidelines refer to.

Each period names its source and the date it was read. A monthly average is not a forecast for any year, and the Guidelines' wording is that an assessment may be required, so ask the City or the provider what your block needs.

Process

How long does the City take, and when can I use the system?

The City of Busselton says its assessment will be completed within 21 days of all relevant documentation being received and application fees being paid. That is the assessment, not the permit to use. After the work, the council inspects and then grants the permit, and the system is not used before it.

How close to my boundary can the tank go?

The regulations say no one shall cause or permit the construction of a septic tank closer than 1.2 m to the foundations of any building, or the boundary of any lot, unless otherwise approved. Near a waterway or significant wetland the State's Planning for Water Guidelines (December 2025) add a guideline distance of 100 m for an onsite system, and say they are guidance, not a rule applied with stringent regulatory effect.

Timing

How quickly can someone get to me?

We cannot promise a time. It depends on the provider's bookings. Form and phone enquiries are passed to a local provider, who contacts you directly.

When is the ground wettest in Busselton, and does it matter for a septic system?

The State's Planning for Water Guidelines say that where it is not evident that separation from groundwater will be achieved, a hydrogeological assessment of the site under the wettest time of the year conditions may be required. The Bureau of Meteorology's long-term record for Busselton Shire (read 6 October 2026) puts the highest mean rainfall in June, at 164.2 mm, and July, at 161.1 mm, against 10.0 mm in January. That is an average over the whole record, not a forecast for any year, and whether your block needs an assessment is for the City to say.

Permits and approvals

Does the City or the Department of Health approve my system?

For a single residential dwelling, or any other building that produces 540 litres or less of sewage a day, the Department of Health's form says local government approval alone is needed. For a larger residence or commercial premises, the City of Busselton says approval from the Department of Health is required.

Service area

Which suburbs do you cover?

The City of Busselton. Four pages are written around one sourced fact each: Eagle Bay, Yallingup, Wonnerup and Quindalup. The rest of the City is covered on the same terms.

Do you install the tanks yourselves?

No. This site is run by a marketing company, which passes each enquiry to an independent qualified local provider. The provider inspects the property and quotes, then does any work itself; we have no crews or plant.
