Septic Tank Installation in Wonnerup

Wonnerup takes its name from an estuary, and a lot near one meets rules that a lot inland does not. The Wonnerup Estuary is one of two former estuaries that make up the Vasse-Wonnerup Ramsar wetland, and the State's Planning for Water Guidelines (December 2025) say an on-site wastewater system should not be located within 100 m of a significant wetland, a term that includes Ramsar wetlands. This is about lots near the estuary, not every lot in Wonnerup.

Permits and City of Busselton rules

A septic system here needs the local government's approval before construction starts, whichever locality it is in: the Department of Health says it is an offence to start without an approval from the local government or the Department. This page does not say what any one lot needs beyond that. The City of Busselton can say for a lot, and the Water Corporation whether sewer reaches it.

Septic Tank Installation around Wonnerup

The Australian Government's Ramsar entry describes the Vasse-Wonnerup System as two former estuaries, the Vasse and Wonnerup Lagoons, with inflows of seawater managed by floodgates since the early 1900s. State Planning Policy 2.9 says significant wetlands include Ramsar wetlands, and lists among its sensitive water resource areas land within 1 km up groundwater gradient and 250 m down groundwater gradient of a significant wetland. Where an onsite system sits in such an area, the Guidelines say secondary treatment systems with nutrient removal will generally be required.

The wetland also touches Vasse and Busselton, and no source read for this site says how many Wonnerup lots fall inside any of these distances, so this page does not. The policy points to a map for that. Ask the City whether a lot near the estuary is inside one, and ask the provider what system and layout it proposes for it. The position page and the choosing page cover the distances in full.
